Recursive subdivision of polygonal complexes and its applications in computer-aided geometric design

چکیده
A method for subdividing polygonal complexes and identifying conditions to control their limit curves is presented. A polygonal complex is a sequence of panels where every two adjacent panels share one edge only. We formulate this problem and establish a general theory which has a number of applications in CAGD such as the generation of subdivision surfaces through predefined arbitrary network of curves. This is a further extension of the capability of these surfaces making them more attractive and more practical in surface modeling and computer graphics. One of the main advantages of the proposed scheme is that the regions of the surface between the interpolated curves do not have to be rectangular—a limitation of existing tensor-product based CAD systems. 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. Hexagonal Topology and Polygonal Complex Approach
The importance of generating subdivision surfaces is being appreciated in both geometric modelling and computer graphics applications. In this paper, a scheme is proposed which defines polygonal complexes to generate limiting curves interpolated by the surface obtained using hexagonal subdivision technique. The algorithm developed for the implementation of the scheme, works successfully as show...
متن کاملFilling N-sided Holes Using Combined Subdivision Schemes
A new method is presented for calculating N-sided surface patches. The algorithm generates a subdivision surface which satisses arbitrary C 1 boundary conditions. The proposed subdivision scheme is based on a Catmull-Clark type subdivision scheme that operates in the surface interior. Near the boundary we introduce new subdivision rules that involve the given boundary conditions. The generated ...
متن کاملDynamic Catmull-Clark Subdivision Surfaces
Recursive subdivision schemes have been extensively used in computer graphics, computer-aided geometric design, and scientific visualization for modeling smooth surfaces of arbitrary topology. Recursive subdivision generates a visually pleasing smooth surface in the limit from an initial user-specified polygonal mesh through the repeated application of a fixed set of subdivision rules. In this ...
متن کاملSubdivision surfaces for CAD - an overview
Subdivision surfaces refer to a class of modelling schemes that define an object through recursive subdivision starting from an initial control mesh. Similar to B-splines, the final surface is defined by the vertices of the initial control mesh. These surfaces were initially conceived as an extension of splines in modelling objects with a control mesh of arbitrary topology. They exhibit a numbe...
متن کاملTeaching meshes, subdivision and multiresolution techniques
In recent years, geometry processing algorithms that directly operate on polygonal meshes have become an indispensable tool in computer graphics, CAD/CAM applications, numerical simulations, and medical imaging. Because the demand for people that are specialized in these techniques increases steadily the topic is finding its way into the standard curricula of related lectures on computer graphi...
